Birnir Jón Sigurðsson

Birnir is an Icelandic artist working with text, film, and theatre as both author and performer. His style is visual and playful, often exploring themes such as the environment, the attention economy, love, and human connection. He creates solo works as a playwright and director and is also a member of the devised theatre collectives CGFC and Ást og Karóki.

From 2022 to 2023, Birnir served as the official playwright for Borgarleikhúsið – the Reykjavík City Theatre – where he wrote Sýslumaður Dauðans (The Death Department). He is the founder of the experimental theatre space tóma rýmið in Reykjavík, where he has hosted and co-hosted various events, including experimental theatre nights, the Safe Fest theatre festival, and the short film festival Gullmolinn.

In 2025, Birnir received the inaugural RÚV Motivational Prize, and The Death Department was named Play of the Year at the Icelandic Theatre Awards, Gríman.
