Rereading the present, rewriting the classics

Beskrivning

This discussion brings together distinguished guests to explore how classical works are redefined in contemporary theatre adaptations. The adaptation of classics from epic to dramatic has evolved into a syncretic and multilayered reinterpretation in the present day. Each new adaptation of a classic is, in some sense, a “betrayal" of the original, introducing new imagery, meanings and the aesthetic codes of the stage director. Yet, the present adaptations serve as a mirror to our eclectic contemporary world.

Jacopo Fo (Italy), known for his writings on the history of human folly, will examine how the ancient Italian tradition of commedia dell’arte is revived in modern adaptations of Dario Fo’s works. Swedish critic Rebecka Kärde will delve into the surrealist creations of Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Vlad Dragulescu (Romania) will explore modern adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, beginning with the questions: What directions are current interpretations of Shakespeare taking? Is Shakespeare still our contemporary?

The speakers will conclude that, regardless of the type of adaptation, classical works can help, if not fully comprehend, at least confront our fragmented present.
