Staying in the unknown

Theatre and performance maker Birnir Jón Sigurðsson talks about entering the Icelandic theatre scene as a playwright and director (maybe even auteur) focused on creating performances for the here and now. He shares his love of grassroots work and experiments, the founding of his garage theatre tóma rýmið, his admiration for devised theatre, and how his playwriting is both wildly different and not so different (just lonelier and less compromised). He speaks of cultivating surprise and the unknown — boiling it all down to one core principle: not to create, but to find.
