Canongate is an independent publisher based in Edinburgh and London, publishing an eclectic mix of fiction and non-fiction.

Some of our most successful and notable books have included Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library (sold into fifty-four languages), Amy Liptrot’s The Outrun (winner of the Wainwright Prize) and Ruth Ozeki’s The Book of Form and Emptiness (winner of the Women’s Prize).

For more than fifty years we’ve been committed to fiercely independent, high quality and innovative publishing. We’ve won both Independent Publisher of the Year and (twice) Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards. We’ve published Nobel laureates and celebrities, political prisoners and activists.

We believe books can create joy, excite curiosity, foster empathy and change lives, so we amplify voices that need to be heard, share stories that deserve to last and, in everything we do, strive to be fair, brave and socially responsible. In 2024 we became the first UK trade publisher to be certified as a B Corporation in recognition of our positive impact on our communities, our colleagues and the world at large.
