A war on women? Gender based violence & femicide in South Africa

Every day, eight women are killed in South Africa. Gender-based violence and femicide is declared as a national emergency.
At the same, a global backlash against women’s rights and bodily autonomy, including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, is developing.
In order to identify sustainable solutions, there is an urgent need to address the root causes of the increasing violence. Changing norms and attitudes, a survivor centered approach, mobilizing innovative partnerships and methods is needed – in all forms of response.
How can secular and religious actors work together for sexual and reproductive health and rights?

Representatives from survivors’ movements, academia, UN and civil society will participate in the panel.

– Nompilo Ngewensa, founder of the survivors network Phepisa
– Professor Charlene Van Der Walt, Gender and Theology at University of KwaZulu Natal
