Bodies Under Siege is a spoken word poetry and music showcase foregrounding women and the LGBTQI+ community, highlighting their plight and amplifying their voices through spoken word poetry. The concept showcases artists, who through their work, are vocal and introspective to the struggles women and the LGBTQI+ community face, such as gender based violence, femicide, hate crimes, body shaming, patriarchy, sexual violence and many other societal issues they are faced with from a South African perspective.

This production showcases the above mentioned group’s ability to overcome adversity in different public spaces and still exude excellence, empathy, co-creation, dignity and strength. It’s a reminder of the perseverance these groups possess as well as their ever evolving and pivotal role in society.

The showcase borrows from the voices of women, the LGBTQI+ community as well as men in order to hold the conversation to the light.

Featured poets in this production are vangile gantsho , Christie " FossilSoul " van Zyl and Solly "Soetry" Ramatswi accompanied by live band consisting of Phuti Sepuru on keyboard, Concord Nkabinde on Bass Guitar and David Klassen on percussion.

This production is made possible through the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Pretoria, Rámus, the Olof Palme Internationel Center, The South African State Theatre and the National Arts Council of South Africa

Poet Biographies

Christie " FossilSoul " van Zyl
FossilSoul, formally known as Christie van Zyl, is a published written and spoken word poet, social entrepreneur, indigenous wellness consultant and sangoma (traditional healer). Her work as an artivist has seen her write in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity expression, as well as broader topics covering intersectional & plural identities. She has travelled to perform at the LOOK3 Festival of the Photo in Charlottesville, USA, the Ba Re Ne E Ne Re Literary Festival in Lesotho. As well as attended a cultural exchange residency titled #VACEP (Visual and Cultural Exchange Program) with Inkanyiso Media and Kunstplaas [10] Gallery in Oslo, Norway. Her poem ‘Ode to the Young Black Lesbian’ was a best seller during the exhibition, selling ten visual representations of the poem printed onto a scroll paper.

FossilSoul has worked with Professor Zanele Muholi writing commissioned poetry pieces for their lifetime photography projects ‘Faces and Phases’, as well as ‘Somnyama Ngonyama’. FossilSoul’s
work has been published on several online platforms, as well as an anthology titled ‘Walking the Tightrope: An African LGBTI Anthology’ and most recently in the “Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness" book, published by Aperture and released in October 2018.

vangile gantsho
vangile gantsho is a poet, healer and co-founder of impepho press . Unapologetically black woman, she has travelled the continent and the globe participating in literary events and festivals. gantsho is the author of two poetry collections: Undressing in front of the window (2015) and red cotton (2018). She holds an MA from the University Currently Known as Rhodes (2016) and was named one of Mail& Guardian’s Top Young 200 South Africans of 2018.

Her latest collection, red cotton, an exploration of what it means to be black, queer, and woman in modern-day South Africa, was named City Press Top Poetry Read of 2018, and long-listed for the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences 2020 Award.

Soly "Soetry" Ramatswi
Born and bred in Pollen, a small village in Limpopo, Solly Ramatswi, also known as Soetry, moulds the imagery of his village to write poems about black boys and his experience. Having the experience of living in both the village and the city, he bridges the two spaces and finds common ground with his writing; Makes the two worlds look familiar with each other. The 25-year-old uses poetry to reflect his experiences and views on the current states of manhood, with the aim to learn, unlearn, understand, and relearn.
