Curing a hangover by removing monuments

Beskrivning

South Africa is a society where the heritage of slavery, racism, colonialism and apartheid is very much visible and alive still today. This heritage carries many faces – socio-economic inequalities, lack of freedom and equal opportunities, xenophobia and violence. The recent mustfall-movements and calls for decolonisation of higher education have highlighted the urgent need to deal with these issues, not only at the universities but in all sectors of society. They have also exposed the political tensions between generations, between the ruling elite of the former liberation movements and the disillusioned youth of today’s South Africa. In this seminar we hope to bring light on some of the shadows of the past and the hopes for the future.
